Trying to understand how long these weekly checks actually last

I'm hoping someone can give me a straight answer because I've been getting conflicting info from the insurance company and my own doctor's office. I broke my ankle pretty badly in a fall at work back in October, had surgery with plates and screws, and I've been doing physical therapy ever since. My doctor just told me last week that I'm probably looking at another three to four months before I can even think about going back to any kind of physical work, and honestly that news hit me harder than I expected. I've been getting my weekly checks regularly, which I'm grateful for, but I'm starting to worry about how long they actually last. Someone at the hardware store told me they cut you off after six months no matter what, but someone else said it depends on what the doctor says and whether you're still actively treating. I've been trying to find clear info about Workers' Compensation Benefits in Saugerties because that's where my employer is located, but everything I read online either contradicts itself or is written in such legal language that I can't make heads or tails of it. Does anyone know what the actual timeline looks like? Is there a cap on how many weeks you can receive benefits, or does it just keep going until the doctor says you've reached maximum improvement? I'm trying to plan ahead financially because if these checks stop in a couple months I need to figure something out now, not when it's already too late.
