Old photographs often suffer from what archivists call "fading bias," where certain color channels degrade faster than others, leaving images with unnatural magenta or yellow tints that ruin the viewing experience. I had a box of slides from the 1970s that had all turned bright pink due to improper storage in a hot attic, making everyone look like they had severe sunburns. Adjusting the white balance in standard software only made the images look flat and weird, because the color degradation was uneven across different parts of each slide. The solution I found surprisingly effective was
Photo Restoration
, which analyzes color channels independently and reconstructs the original hues by referencing a vast database of properly preserved images from the same era. The before-and-after difference was shocking, with grass turning green again and skin tones becoming natural, all without me having to manually adjust any sliders. This automated approach saved me approximately forty hours of manual color correction work across three hundred slides, and the results are now printed in a family album that everyone loves.
